I recently found a great Preview hack. Many PDF e-books have gobs of whitespace borders around the book. Preview lets you crop all the pages of a PDF file at once. You use the select tool, go to the sidebar, select the thumbnail view of the sidebar (at the bottom of that window), select all the pages, and then crop. You can trim as little or as much of that whitespace as you like. When you use the “automatically resize” option in the view menu, you’ll then see larger text than if you hadn’t trimmed the extra whitespace.

I’m having the same issues as John had with color and exporting jpeg images from photoshop. John found a solution, does anyone know what website or article John was referring to?

With all the tips mentioned in this show, Preview has become the fastest way for me to get sketches/mockups/wireframes to the client for review. Just open a document and drag, grab and annotate. The *one* feature I’m missing is page numbers. If I could have Preview generate a set of page numbers after I’m done assembling and reordering the review images, I would be President for Life.

This, was indeed, a great episode. For the first time (G4 NAS drive not included), Macbreak Tech didn’t just take me to a new level of understanding, it showed me something i had been completely ignoring, and from the ground up, showed me what if could do from start to finish, including the power user features (and even got me into customize tool-bar), All in less than an hour. While there were some issues, because this show felt different to what you usually do, it was a very good format, and while less than an hour is cool, i still like the longer 1:20min+ shows, if you could mix the two formats together, you’ve got an even better formula.

Well, this PodCast was about Preview, so let’s not get too lost in this DVD thing. But in a Bizarre Way, the topics DO relate. Because the QuickLook lasts about as long as those DVDs would.

This MUST be about the studios still trying to get around not just BlockBuster, but also Netflix, iTunes, unBox, etc. I have too many DVDs I’ve watched once and will never watch again. But a few I or my family have viewed again and again.

Glad to see I’m not crazy (at least not regarding this).
That is exactly what I remember.
QT and 7-11 had shown some interest.
I would’ve thought Red Box would’ve taken away any appeal for this idea.

Though, if they sold them at airports, that might be a good idea. Red Box DVDs have to be returned to the same box, I’d think. Or maybe airport Red Boxes with these DVDs.

I do remember when AOL CDs were handed out freely, so maybe this isn’t as incomprehensible as I’d first thought. Still seems silly.

Grab in Preview – tried it, works great. But it still drops the TIFF grab on the desktop. No real problem, just would be nice to be able to set a preferred file type in Grab and have it go right to jpg or gif or tiff, as desired -

As to Steven’s comment about the throw away DVDs, I recall that dumb idea. I think they were to come in a “sealed” envelope that when opened to the air started the self-destruction. Anyone remember “Mission Impossible?”

Perhaps this was a bit lazy of me, but that happens.
I am listening to TWiM this moment and the discussion is on disposable DVDs.
I can’t believe that no one remembered this happening before.

I used to work at Blockbuster (4-5 years ago) and I remember this emerging, there was talk that it would be in convenience stores. The Die Another Day Bond movie was the first movie released on it (very limited).

I believe the name it was going to be marketed under was EZ DVD.
Sorry for threadjacking, I just couldn’t find any normal TWiM person to email it to.

This was a great show! Thanks! I went right to work and reset my ScanSnap to use Preview instead of Acrobat Pro 8. Zoooom! Zipppp!

I had never thought of dragging files into the window to add them to a PDF. Much faster and easier than adding files in Adobe by either approach I’ve used (Create a new pdf from open, and/or add pages).

I also did not know Preview had an annotate tool. Set in my ways until this show, I would have just kept on doing what I’ve been doing for several years.

Finally, I’m looking forward to using Grab in Preview. What a treat. I’m often creating Grab screenshots, then having to SAVE then OPEN THE TIFF in preview and SAVE IT AGAIN as a .jpg.
