from the twitter:
howlingwolves @johnfoster Why did you kill the show?
one thing that needs to be addressed is the future of MacBreak Tech. it’s dead. but you already knew that. this is the official me talking about it being dead. we’re proud of the body of work that we made. most of the subjects we covered are full of useful information. even though some of it was recorded over a year ago well researched shows don’t die easily. I have not decided the fate of the old shows yet. I may repurpose the content into something else. whatever. I’m not deciding that now.
so why is the show d-e-a-d?! some of it is business and a lot of it is personal. it’s more about the personal because the business end is easy enough to sort out. it’s biggest issue to solve is with “the name” because I have a problem with the name. technically we “as in Leo and Alex” have all been friends. yet as I started working toward monetizing our efforts it wasn’t clear exactly how those efforts wouldn’t get confused with MBW and the MB video. advertisers don’t like confusion. and while we’re all friends it shouldn’t matter. but it did matter and it got confused… thus, punt.
there is also an issue with the trademark that is MacBreak. it’s pretty tough for me to want to make a business around something that I don’t control absolutely. how sucky would it be to start making money only to get stepped on legally? IP theft (or the accusations there of) can be costly to defend.
I’m happy to explain the “persona” parts over beers in person. but I won’t type the words because it’s just a bitter rant. okay so you really want to know? email me and I’ll tell you. but not here.
this decision didn’t come lightly. I’ve agonized over turning off a show that I loved doing. it doesn’t help that some of you have written saying “MBT is the best show on the internet” and “we miss you guy, come back.” but at the end of the day I don’t have the energy (or the incentive) to help make the MacBreak brand that it could be.
I’ll be as open as I can about why I killed MBT so there isn’t speculations drawn by people guessing as to the whatwhenwhywhohow after I let the domain expire. I’m happy to answer specific and the undirected questions about things if you have them.
it was fun! KTHXBYE!
